My trial reel playbook.

One take, eight versions, let the internet pick

Psst. Everything here is free, always. If you want to support us, grab some of our electrolytes or introduce us to a store that would love to sell them. Business owners know business owners! xo Jaye

Jaye, co-founder of Good Livin'

Hey, I'm Jaye. I run Good Livin' with Brett, and I'm documenting every step of building an eight figure brand without an eight figure team. These guides are how I actually do things. Free, always.

Trial reels are the most underrated button on Instagram.

A trial reel gets shown to people who don't follow you first. Your followers don't see it on your grid. So you can test ideas on strangers without cluttering your profile, then share the winner with everyone.

How I set up a test

  1. Film one longer take. Talk through a few different points. Same outfit, same spot.
  2. Keep the same open and close. Every version starts with the same hook and ends with the same line. Only the middle changes. That way you're testing the idea, not the intro.
  3. Cut 6 to 8 versions. Each with one different middle section. Mine were 23 to 39 seconds, plus the full long one.
  4. Post them all as trial reels, 20 minutes apart. Same evening, same conditions, fair fight. I schedule mine in Metricool so I don't have to sit there.
  5. Wait about 3 days. Trial reels keep getting tested for a few days. Don't judge them after one hour.

What I compare

Likes are nice. They're also the least useful number here.

Then post the winner

Share the winning version with your followers as a normal reel. And look at why it won. Was it the topic? The length? The first line of the middle section? That's your next video.

Honest note: I'm running my first big test right now with 8 versions of the same video. I'll share what won in my emails, the good and the embarrassing.

Here's the transcript of my video: [paste]. Split it into an intro, a closing line and 6 standalone middle sections. Each version should be intro + one middle + closing, under 40 seconds, and make sense on its own. Give me a caption for each with a different hook.

Psst. This is all free.

Always will be. If you feel like supporting what Brett and I are building, there are two ways that make my whole week:

Grab some of our electrolytes Introduce us to a store

Grab another one
